Sometimes you don’t realise how much you need to stop until you actually do.
Recently, my husband and I went to Bucharest, Romania, and one of the places I really wanted to experience was Therme București. And I can honestly say that this was probably one of my favourite parts of the whole trip.
For me, Therme wasn’t just about swimming pools, saunas and having a massage. It was about taking time out for myself and taking time out for my marriage.
Life can become so busy. You’re a mum, a wife, you’re working, you’re thinking about the children, the house, appointments, what needs doing next and a million other things. Even when you’re supposed to be relaxing, sometimes your brain hasn’t actually got the message!
At Therme, I finally felt like I could just stop.
There was nowhere I needed to rush to. Nobody was waiting for me to finish something. I didn’t have to keep checking the time. I could sit in a pool, go into a sauna, get into a jacuzzi, lie down on one of the relaxation beds or simply do absolutely nothing.
And I loved every minute of it.
Sometimes Your Marriage Needs an Escape Too
One thing this trip reminded me of is that taking time away together is important for a marriage.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be Romania or some big expensive holiday. I think it’s more about deliberately stepping outside of your normal environment.
Being somewhere different meant we weren’t surrounded by the usual responsibilities of home. We could just be husband and wife for a little while, rather than constantly being Mum and Dad or thinking about what needed to be done next.
That escape was needed.
And Therme was perfect for that because once you’re inside, you can genuinely spend hours doing very little — and that’s actually the point!

There Is So Much to Do
I knew Therme had pools and saunas before we went, but I don’t think I appreciated just how much there would be.
There were pools, jacuzzis, different saunas, relaxation areas, water beds, red-light areas and activities happening throughout the day. There were so many different spaces where you could just find somewhere comfortable and relax.
Some of the areas are upstairs, so that’s something to consider if stairs or mobility are difficult for you. However, there were also relaxation facilities, pools and sauna experiences on the ground level, which was helpful.
One of my favourite things was being able to book a massage.
If you’re planning on having a treatment, though, this is one thing I would organise early. There can be queues and appointments fill up, so don’t spend half the day relaxing and then suddenly decide you want a massage!
Check the treatments and prices when you arrive and get yourself booked in.
The Wristband Made Everything So Much Easier
Another thing I really liked was the wristband system.
My wristband had a spending limit of around 600 lei, which at the time worked out at a little over £100.
I could use it throughout Therme to pay for things such as my food, drinks and massage rather than constantly carrying my purse around.
That might sound like a tiny thing, but when you’re trying to switch off, it makes such a difference.
I didn’t need to keep worrying about where my purse was. I didn’t need to carry my phone everywhere.
I could just walk around, tap my wristband when I needed something and continue enjoying my day.
And strangely, not having my phone constantly in my hand was part of what made the experience so nice.
I was actually there.
Not scrolling.
Not answering messages.
Not checking notifications.
Just there.
My Biggest Tip: GO EARLY!
If you’re thinking of visiting Therme București, this would probably be my biggest piece of advice:
Go early.
Give yourself the whole day if you can.
There is so much there that you don’t want to arrive late and spend the entire time thinking about how many hours you have left.
The earlier you arrive, the more time you have to explore, book treatments, eat, swim and — most importantly — actually relax.
I would also strongly recommend going off-peak if you’re able to.
We went during a busy period and there were a LOT of children.
Now, Therme is absolutely somewhere families can enjoy, and there are areas for children, including pools and slides. But if your reason for going is peace, quiet and relaxation, school holidays probably aren’t going to give you the calmest version of the experience.
If I went again, I would definitely look at quieter dates outside the major school and Christmas holiday periods.
You Can Still Find Your Moment If You Go as a Family
If you are going with your children, though, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it.
There are areas where the children can enjoy the pools and slides while adults can relax nearby, so I would still try to find those little moments for yourself.
Sit down.
Lie on the relaxation bed.
Have that massage.
Let yourself enjoy being there.
As parents, we can get into the habit of organising amazing experiences for our children and then spend the entire day making sure they’re having fun.
Sometimes we’re allowed to enjoy it too.
Would I Go Back?
Absolutely.
For me, Therme was one of those experiences where I genuinely felt like I had stepped away from everyday life for a while.
I rested.
I enjoyed myself.
I spent quality time with my husband.
And for once, I wasn’t rushing to get somewhere or thinking about what I needed to do next.
That’s something I’ve realised I need more of.
Sometimes self-care isn’t another thing you need to add to your already overflowing to-do list.
Sometimes it’s getting away.
Putting the phone down.
Sitting in a warm pool.
Getting the massage.
Laughing with your husband.
And allowing yourself to think:
Nothing needs me right now. I can just be here.
That’s what Therme gave me.
And I think that’s why I enjoyed it so much.
