Fibromyalgia and a Tonsillectomy—A Painful Combo I Wouldn’t Wish on My Worst Enemy

Let me tell you something—if I had known how painful getting my tonsils removed would be, I would have shaken hands with my tonsils and told them, “You win, I’ll just live with you forever.” But no, I had to be brave. I had to think, “It’ll be fine, I’ve had two kids—what’s a little throat pain?”

Oh, how naive I was.

They said, “Recovery takes about two weeks.” Okay, fine, I thought. What they didn’t say was that for the first week, I’d feel like I swallowed fire and chased it down with glass shards. They also didn’t say that fibromyalgia would make sure the pain spread beyond just my throat. Nope—my entire body joined in on the suffering, as if it were some kind of team effort. My head? Hurts. My neck? Stiff. My joints? On strike.

And let’s talk about eating. Or should I say, not eating? I’ve lost 5kg in just four days because swallowing feels like a punishment. I see food, I want food, but my throat says, “Absolutely not.” Ice cream? Nope. Mashed potatoes? Struggle. I’m basically living on sips of water and regret at this point.

And then there’s the sleep. I thought I’d get some rest, but no—fibro pain and post-surgery pain had other plans. So I’m either knocked out from exhaustion or wide awake at 3 a.m. contemplating life choices.

The real kicker? If you told me I had to either have another tonsillectomy or give birth again, I’d be booking a delivery room ASAP. No hesitation. At least after labor, they give you a cute baby—what do I get after this? A sore throat and a diet I never asked for.

So here I am, one week in, still in pain, still unable to eat properly, and still questioning all my decisions. But hey, at least I can say my tonsils will never betray me again—because they’re gone.

Have you had a tonsillectomy as an adult? Or do you live with fibromyalgia and find that every little thing feels ten times worse? Let me know—I could use some solidarity (or at least a laugh at how ridiculous this whole thing is).
